2011 Cricket World Cup was hosted by Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India together. This was the first time in World Cup history that two Asian teams had appeared in the final. It was also the first time since the 1992 World Cup that the final match did not feature Australia.
One of the most historic day in Indian Cricket ends with a stunning six by Mahendra Singh Dhoni as Indian team won their second world cup after 28 years against Sri Lanka in final.
The final match was played between India and Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Mumbai was all blue and chanting “India India” and the road to this glory was not very easy and there are a lot of heroes of this glory.
1st Match: India vs Bangladesh, Group B match at Dhaka – Feb 19, 2011
This was a very first match of a campaign and India put 370 runs on the board with the help of fine innings by Virender Sehwag(175) and Virat Kohli(100*). Later on, Bangladesh only managed to put 283 runs in 50 overs.
The duo of Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli Sink Bangladesh and gave India a fine start in the Tournament.
Sehwag was appointed as the man of the match and Dhoni suggests improvement in fielding as they could save more runs. In this match, Sehwag made the job easy for India but the road was still very long.
10th Match: India vs England, Group B match at Bengaluru – Feb 27, 2011
The game results in the most epic encounter of WC11 which further results in a thrilling draw. Chinnaswamy Stadium at Bengaluru is known for its high scoring battles and the average score shows that Batsmen get benefit from the pitch.
In this match master blaster, Sachin Tendulkar scored 120 runs for India and at the moment when Zaheer was bowling those 120 runs were looking unbeatable but somehow Andrew Strauss managed to beat that score and put 158 runs on his own.
Andrew Strauss took the game away from India and Dhoni learned that path to the final is not easy, in that match Andrew Strauss named the man of the match award.
22nd Match: India vs Ireland, Group B match at Bengaluru – Mar 6, 2011
Star of the match was Yuvraj Singh as he shines with the ball and bat as well. Yuvraj performs well with ball and bat as he picked 5 wickets and scored 50 crucial runs in the victory of India.
It was a decent all-round performance under pressure where others bowlers were too ordinary. It was the start of a motivated Yuvraj Singh phase, his passion for the world cup win.
Yuvraj was named the man of the match award for his brilliant performance and he was a key player for Dhoni.
29th match: India vs South Africa, Group B match at Nagpur – Mar 12, 2011
It was a battle of nerves where South Africa holds their nerves as well as India faces a tough contest and lost the match. In that match, Sachin Tendulkar scored 111 runs which help to put India 296 runs.
On the other end, Dale Steyn was on fire as he picked 5 crucial wickets to restrict India. It was a match of nerves where India lost in last over by 3 wickets.
It was the game where Dhoni and his man learn the lesson that the road to glory is not easy. Dale Steyn was named Man of the match for picking 5 wickets. South Africa shows that calling them chokers may hurt them.
42nd match: India vs West Indies, Group B match at Chennai – Mar 20, 2011
This was all about Yuvraj Singh again, another fine performance by him as he scores 113 runs to put 268 runs on the board for India. Other batsmen were struggling but Yuvraj somehow manages to score and a fine inning of confidence turns him to pick 2 crucial wickets.
India beat West Indies by 80 runs and all credit goes to Yuvraj. Another match winnings performance by him as India reaches Quarterfinals comfortably.
India finishes second in the group table and was forced to face a tough Australian side. Yuvraj was again Man of the match and he makes it 3 in one world, that’s really amazing stuff from Yuvraj.
2nd quarterfinal: India vs Australia at Ahmedabad – Mar 24, 2011
Another crucial day in the campaign and Yuvraj Singh make it calm again. Another crucial performance by him with bat and ball both. It was a hard game for India because Australia is the most successful in the World Cup.
Australia put 260 runs on the board with help of their skipper scoring 104 runs. Australia was looking sharp but India has something else in mind. Tendulkar and Gambhir gave a good start to India but later in India were losing wickets, but Yuvraj holds to one end.
In the end, Yuvraj Raina makes it simple for the team. It was another decent performance by Yuvraj as he tears out after hitting the winning shot against Brett Lee. Tears were of the joy of beating champions, beating Australian team in a knockout fixture is not easy but Yuvraj Singh was determined to do so.
It was the emotional night for the team as Yuvraj was spotted with some symptoms of Hematemesis.
After all checkups, cancer was there in the reports. But Yuvraj was determined to play for his country, he was not physically well but his mind has other intentions.It was Pakistan waiting in the semi-final and Yuvraj’s emotional night turns into tears of joy.
Yuvraj was named the man of the match for the fourth time in World cup.
2nd Semi-final: India vs Pakistan at Mohali – Mar 30, 2011
India vs Pakistan always joins feelings of the fans from both countries, they pretend it as a war. Fans remain very high on energy in these kinds of matches. No team can’t afford to lose.
It was a good game of cricket but this time it was not Yuvraj Singh show, as he was bowled on the very first ball of his innings. But it turns out to be master blaster show as Sachin Tendulkar scores 85 runs with some class shots.
India put 260 runs on the board and Pakistan only reach up to 231. It was a good performance by bowlers as well as India scrap theirs into finals. Dhoni’s team was looking confident but their still lot of work to do as Sri Lanka was also a tough side for the finals.
Sachin Tendulkar was named the man of the match for his fine knock.
Final: India vs Sri Lanka at Mumbai – Apr 2, 2011
It was the game of emotions for fans as it was not a normal game, India has a big chance to secure the title after 28 years and at home as well. Sri Lanka batting first put 274 runs on the board and this total was never chased in the final before.
India came to bat gets a massive blow as they lose Sehwag in the very first over of Malinga. Also at the other end, it was not Sachin’s day as he departs on 18.
Indian crowd was tensed, then some decent looking partnership held between Kohli and Gambhir, but Dilshan takes a stunning catch to depart Virat Kohli.
The moment Virat dismissed Dhoni changed his tactics and choose himself ahead of Yuvraj Singh, maybe because of Muttiah Muralitharan or to maintain a left-right hand combination.
Some questions arise because it was not a good tournament with the bat for Dhoni and he replaces inform Yuvraj. But the strategy works for Dhoni and with the help of Gambhir’s fine innings, they made it possible.
It was a hard fought, losing their star players, changing the tactics, everything works for Mahendra Singh Dhoni as Dhoni finishes off in style with a six, India left the trophy after 28 years.
Yuvraj Singh can’t handle his emotions as he tears apart again but this a wonderful feeling of winning the most prestigious title of cricket was there. It was all team effort, great captaincy by Dhoni and a superb performance by Yuvraj throughout the season.
Yuvraj Singh was announced as Man of the Tournament. It was a wonderful moment for the whole country.
The world cup was dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar, a proud moment for him as well. The team was emotional, happy, in tears and lots of expressions were there but this win becomes the most historic win for Indian Cricket.
